August 8, 2015- Festival
Verona
Our next destination was Verona. We arrived via train, and we we were all excited to see another city in Italy. We stayed in the Best Western Hotel Firenze. We ate breakfast at the hotel before heading out. Today we went to see a festival! Being in Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, we decided to plan a Shakespearean day! Our festival was something unique to Italy, we experienced an Opera Festival. We saw an opera festival at the Arena of Verona. The festival was at 8:45 PM, so we had the day to explore! in the evening, we all dressed up and went to dinner at Peperino Pizza and Grill before heading to the Romeo and Juliet play! The lighting at the end of the day was pleasant and made the play even better. The amphitheater was built in the 1st century AD. The setting of the arena makes it so special. In the past, gladiators fought to the death in front of spectators. Now the arena is suited for opera performances. Critics say this is the best place to see an outdoor opera show in the world. Not only because of the atmosphere, but also because of the acoustics. We all thought the sound was great. As we watched we were astounded by the actors who performed. Luckily, we knew enough of Romeo and Juliet because of Mrs. Whitsett's English class :), so we were not completely lost. We understood most of the play, and were glad we could see it re-enacted!
