August 18, 2015- Leave Italy+Persuasion with 2 Rhetorical Devices

Leaving Italy
Today, was the day when we needed to leave Italy to come back home! We all had a great time in Italy and can't wait to go back again! Our flight was scheduled at 12:20 p.m. on Aer Lingus but we decided to arrive at the airport at 9:30 a.m. because its was an international flight and Emma had read online that we should arrive early just in case of situations with security or other plane problems. After checking out of our hotel in Naples, Best Western Hotel Paradiso, we got a taxi to the Naples airport for $22.67. The plane ride cost $6,380 for the five coach seats. The trip home made two stops before arriving at the RDU airport. The fist stop was Dublin, Ireland arriving at 2:45 p.m., after a 3 hour and 25 minute plane ride. We had a layover in Dublin for an hour and thirty minutes before our second plane ride departed at 4:15 p.m. for Boston, MA. The plane ride lasted six hours and fifty five minutes but because of the time differences we arrived in Boston at only 6:10 p.m.. From there we had a two hour and fifty seven minute layover until we departed from the Boston airport 9:07 p.m. for RDU Raleigh, NC. Our final plane ride lasted an hour and fifty two minutes and we arrived home at 10:59 p.m. where we got our luggage and each called a taxi to go home. We were both happy and disappointed to go back though because it was hard to find restaurants to eat at in every destination because none of us spoke Italian. We loved Italy though. Italy was like a paradise, luring in tourist from all over the world. Shaily and Caroline were one of those tourists because they didn't want to leave! We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Our trip went by so fast so we made sure we enjoyed every minute of it. Who knows when we will be going back to Italy?! All of our English lessons and World History lessons came in handy. Mrs. Whitsett and Mr. Cooper will be proud to hear that we were able to experience many of the historical things we learned about in class. Who knew that everything we had learned would come in handy?

August 17, 2015- History

Pompeii
Our last destination in Italy before leaving was Pompeii. Many of us were initially scared to go, but we ultimately decided it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We decided to eat a large breakfast before going to Pompeii and the once back have dinner. We arrived by an almost hour long taxi ride which only cost $46.22 for all five of us. Pompeii has been a popular tourist attraction for over 250 years! 1/3 of the buildings are open to the public, and we were able to explore some of the buildings, like the houses of the nobility where you can still see the reminiscent of murals on the walls to restaurants where the stone held the bowls for people to get their lunch at. Some sections of the ancient city are still buried under the cooled lava but the rest of the city Pompeii is open to the public. We whole day in the ancient town! Walking down the streets of the ancient city was amazing. We could imagine what it looked like before coted in lave and hidden from the world for centuries. After spending most of the day we got a taxi back to our hotel, Best Western Paradiso, where we ate dinner at La Bettola del Gusto. We had a great time in the famous city and learned a lot about the history and culture of the city and the people who had once occupied it.

August 16, 2015- Nature/Environment

Mount Vesuvius
After arriving by train the day before we our last destination was Naples, Italy. Our first day we were excited to see Mount Vesuvius, the famous volcano known for covering Pompeii in lava destroying the Roman city. We ate a big brunch before leaving since we would be at the volcano all day. The area around Vesuvius is a national park, and we were in awe when we saw the spectacular sight. The summit of the volcano is open to visitors, so we ventured to the top! Spending most of our morning doing so. As we walked up Mt. Vesuvius we saw the beautiful elevated views as well as over heard a tour group talk about the history! The group was pretty slow and we soon passed them on our way up the volcano, but not before learning some about the volcano. For example the volcano is one of the most dangerous volcanoes today, even though it is dormant. It is so dangerous because of the three million people in the radius of the volcano. Also we learned that Mt. Vesuvius was once taller than its 4,203 ft. but the top was blasted off in the expulsion in 79 AD that destroyed Pompeii. The climb up the volcano was not easy but once at the top it was all worth it because of the beautiful panoramic views of the city of Naples and the ocean that lies west of the volcano. We had packed snacks to eat while enjoying the view. After about two hours absorbing the views and taking pictures we hiked back down the volcano and grabbed a taxi back to our hotel, Best Western Paradiso, for $51.11. Once back at the hotel, we sat and relaxed for a while and then went out for dinner.

August 15, 2015- Culture+ Food

Trevi Fountain

Our last destination in Rome was to Trevi fountain. It was constructed by the Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci in 1629. The fountain was previously at the junction of three roads, but it is now a
very popular tourist attraction. We all wanted to throw coins into the fountain, a tradition most tourist do because it is said that throwing coins into the fountain backwards brings good luck and prosperity. To properly throw the coins in the fountain though you have to use the right hand and throw over the left shoulder. Approximately 3000 Euros are thrown into the fountain daily and the money subsidizes Rome's needy so we all felt okay when we threw the money into the fountain. After spending some time taking pictures and just enjoying the fountain we ate lunch at Al Moro, because Emma was starvingAfter eating we left the Trevi fountain and started our eight minute walk to the Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna. Despite their name the Spanish Steps were built in the early 18th century at French diplomat's bequest and have an irregular butterfly-shaped design. There we all got flowers from the small cut flower shop that was there at the steps. After getting flowers we sat down and watched people go about their regular day, including two policemen chase someone off the steps for eating lunch there, which apparently is against the law.

We ate dinner around the Spanish Steps around five at La Fontana Di Venere, where we got to try Italy's famous bruschetta. Bruschetta is typically served before a meal in Italy. It consists of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper though sometimes toppings may vary. Emma loved it! Also we ate some desserts at a dessert shop nearbyAfter we ate dinner we returned to our hotel, Orange Hotel Rome, and checked out and got a taxi for the train station for our 8:06 p.m. train from Rome to Naples. The taxi cost $15.96 and once at the train station we waited for a short time and then boarded the train. The train left at the exact time and we arrived in Naples at 9:35 p.m., our last destination. Once in Naples we got a taxi for $19.92 to our hotel, The Best Western Hotel Paradiso.
